Introduction

Earning money with my AntMiner S1 is getting harder and harder, and I don’t think selling it for 25 dollars is a good bargain, since Bitmain charge 0.46 BTC for S1 upgrade kit, I decided to upgrade my S1 to S3.
BTW, it is not a kind of magic that turns a CD player into a DVD player, S1 upgrade kit has brand new hash units to bring hashing boost for less power.

Before started, I’ve taken a picture of my AntMiner S1.

This was the hash rate curve of my AntMiner S1, I’ve overclocked the frequency to 381.25 MHz, hash rate 195 GHash/s, absolutely stable!

Power consumption: 390W, 2W per 1GHash/s, that’s astonishing!

Disassemble

Tools that you need: a combination screwdriver, thermal paste.
Useful parts from S1: 2 iron frames, 2 heat sinks, a controller, a fan including the fan's cover, some screws, 3 data cables for hash board.

For better demonstration, I completely disassembled my S1, if you want a quick upgrade, get the job done by replacing associated hash boards.

Here is the important thing: S1 controller, with the adapter board from upgrade kit, it becomes S3 controller!

I’ve taken the filler away, items included: 2 mini customized heat sinks, a control board holder, some screws, 2 data cables for hash boards, a fan, an adapter board, 2 hash boards of S3.

Installation.

Use four brackets to attach adapter board with the S1 controller, then lock it on control board holder with four screws.

This is my thermal paste, net weight 200g, enough for upgrading 20 or more AntMiner S1. If you don’t have many AntMiner S1, buy less thermal paste.

Apply thermal paste on the heat sink from S1.

Precisely attach the S3 hash board with the heat sink, then lock it with 16 screws. Notice that do not use the 4 screw holes in the middle of the hash board! We need them later.



Apply thermal paste on 16 hash units.

Attach the hash units with the mini customized heat sink, then lock it tightly with 4 screws.

Reassemble the miner, then attach the upgraded S1 controller (hereinafter, S3 controller) to the heat sinks, and lock it with 4 screws.

Reconnect all the data cables, notice that 2 red data cables are used to connect S3 controller with S3 hash boards.

Job done! Now power up!

Test

Click https://www.bitmaintech.com/supp ... 43004432lBQW28O0633 to download the latest firmware “antMiner_S320140826.bin” for AntMiner S3.
Update the firmware, update guide are shown below. I recommend not to save settings during update, in this way all settings become default values.

Here comes the most important data, the hash rate of S3! Average 455 GHash/s at default frequency 225 MHz.
BTW, I’ve made a mistake when installing the fans, in fact, the real temperature was approximately 49℃, indoor temperature was 30℃.

Power consumption: 377W at 455 GHash/s!

Overclock

I overclocked it to 250 MHz, after 10 minutes, some HW were reported, hash rate was approximately 485 GHash/s

Power consumption: 439W at 250MHz. (malfunctioning HW were consuming power, but made no contribution).

Things got better when I overclocked it to 243.75 MHz, the hash rate 509 GHash/s was stable, (2 hours later it was 495GHash/s) and the HW were less than before!



Power consumption: 425W at 243.75MHz!



I upgraded 2 AntMiner S1, after 2 hours of hashing, both ran at 490G-495G, quite stable. Miner status after 24 hours are shown below.

In conclusion, we can safely overclock AntMiner S3 to 243.75MHz, and steady improve the hash rate to 490GHash/s.
