Bitcoin miner manufacturer Avalon released a new Bitcoin miner, the Avalon4-Mini last month. This miner is designed to be a lightweight home miner. It can be connected directly to a computer and controlled via the Chrome (Google Browser) plug-ins newly developed by Avalon. It is simple in appearance and features a friendly user interface to make it an easy-to-use miner anyone can use.

The Avalon4-Mini uses their 4th generation 0.28 nm latest mining chip A3222 chip, can work in a variety of modes and different configuration, mining speeds up to 78GH/s, with power consumption at 32.4W at the wall.

In the box, you’ll find the miner itself, a USB data cable, and a power transfer cable.

The USB cable is the usual A to B type used for printers (Approx length: 145cm), the power transfer cable (PCIE 6pin to DC, Approx length : 26cm)

On the Rear, there are two 60mm cooling fans, USB and power port (this is the heat exhaust side, fans pull air out of the unit).

Setup

Avalon4-Mini is quite easy to setup, connect the miner to a free USB port or powered USB hub then connect the power cable.

You need to use a 6-pin PCI-E connector (most of PC power supplies can be used on this lower power miner), connect the miner to the power supply through the power transfer cable.

Turning on the power supply, you will see an unknown device under device manager, it needs the USB driver to be installed.

The second step is installation of running program of Avalon4-Mini , it is a google plug-in .

First, download and install the latest version of Google Chrome browser (ChromeStandaloneSetup64.zip)(Download address :http://pan.baidu.com/s/1mgJ3Sgw#path=%252FAvalon4-Mini

Then power up and setup the miner

Enable the plug-in in Google Chrome browser after turning on the power supply of the miner.

The user interface is easy to use with no need to mess with .bat scripts etc.

To setup miner voltage and frequency, you can refer to the official voltage /frequency table.

The voltage adjustment needed is based on the miner condition, you can add 125 each time, the miner we used wasn’t particularly great, we were able to set 6500 but there were too many errors when we adjusted to 6750 & 6875.(6500+125+125+125=6875), the error percentage went from 20% to 3%,

Caution: When the miner is running, the browser can be shut down but the plug-in should be keep on.

When turning on the power supply, one of the LEDs is blue and one is green, both will be green when it starts hashing.

(Voltage 6850 frequency 275-250-200) you can change the frequency by the working environment; after 8 hours, you can see the hashrate was around 60-75G.

Conclusion

Avalon 4-mini uses the latest generation of Avalon 4 chip for a compact, entry-level Bitcoin miner.

We were able to make use of the innovative and fast browser plug-in mining software. A graphical UI is straight forward and easy to use, making it appealing to less tech-savvy users that may be put-off by command lines.

Low power consumption and the fact it comes compatible with any ATX PSU is a big plus.

The miner can adjust the frequency automatically based on working environment to set frequency and voltage lower in hot environments and higher in cooler environments so that it can reduce errors and increase product lifespan. You do, however, need to keep your computer on.

Note: Since what we tested is an engineering sample, not the final hardware, the quality may not match that of the final unit. In any case, it more or less performs as expected and in line with the official specification.
