Just at the end of last month, BITMAIN has released the AntMiner S5 equipped with the revolutionary Bitmain’s3rdgeneration Bitcoin mining BM1384 chip.

Let’s do the evaluation!

 

Unsealing The Package:

The AntMiner S5 is packed by 5 cartons, on the carton there are some ISOsigns for proper transportation.

Inside the cartons, S5 miner is protected by cap-shape rigid foams to maximum the safety to the miner during transportation.

Bitmain logo and AntMiner logo are printed on 2 sides of the miner.

Viewed from the front side of the miner, a 12cm cooling fan is used for propelling the air from the front side to the back side. Network interface, status LED and reset button are also here.

Viewed from the back side of the miner, 2 heat sinks and the hash boards form the wind channel, the AntMiner S5 logo is printed here.

What interest me is the panel from the S5, it is made from head-resistant plastics, it weighs just 44.5 gram.

Viewed from the top side of the miner, we can see a controller, data cables, 2 hash boards, each hash board has 2 PCI-E 6-pin power interface.

Each hash board consist of 30 chips, they are serial connected.

Installation:

This is the power supply unit for the evaluation, the Great Wall GW-EPS1000BTC(90+).

Nothing could be simpler than installing the S5, just plug in one of the hash boards you like, then connect the S5 to the internet using a network cable.

Once done, this is what it looks like.

 

Test:

The S5 automatically finish IP configuration when power on, the IP address vary in different Local Area Networks, if you want to know its IP address, please visit: http://www.cybtc.com/thread-9843-1-1.html

Visit http://Your miner’s IP toaccess the S5’s configure webpage, default username & password is “root”.

Finish setting the mining parameters.

Check the miner status, make sure the miner is working.

2 green LED flash when the miner is functioning properly.

According to the 24-hour hash rate curve, the miner is quite stable, the average hash rate is 1.15 THash/s.

Measurement:

Lab temperature: 15, Labrelative humidity: 63%, lab noise: 41dB.

The fan runs in full speed during start-up, it takes a dozen of seconds. Top noise level: 74-78dB.

The noise level drops to 64-67dB after start-up, fan speed slow down at the same time.

1m away from the miner, the noise level is 55-61dB.

Power consumption: average 593W at default frequency 350MHz.

The temperature of the controller is approximately 41-44.

The temperature of the heat sink( near the fan) is 18.

The temperature of the heat sink( far away from the fan) is 26.

According to the sensor inside the miner, the temperature is 41-44.

 

Overclock:

We just simply overclocked the S5 within 1 hour, long-time performance remains unknown.

The default frequency is 350M, changing the frequency to 381.25M.

Power consumption: 644W, hash rate: average 1.3THash/s.

Summary:

1.  Though the 3rd generation BM1384 chip and the 2nd generation chip are all 28nm, the performance of BM1384 is much higher than the 2nd generation chip, same thing happens between the 2nd generation chip and the 1st generation chip, that’s the reason why underclocked 55nm 1st generation chip has the better performance and power ratio when comparing to many 40nm chips.

2.   Power consumption is good with the serial connected new generation chips, service time may last longer.

3.   The noise level is 64-67dB, it is acceptable, but still not a good choice for quiet mining.

4.   Light weight and tiny size design, it is good for large-scale deployment.

5.   Temperature difference between the front part of the heat sink and the rear part of the heat sink is 8, PCB board temperature is 40-45, low temperature is good for stable mining.

6.   Average hash rate is 1.15THash/s, actual hash rate meets the official data well.
